objects’ from around the home. These can be old buttons, beads, pieces
of broken jewellery, an unpaired earring, sequins, ribbon and other
haberdashery. All should be colour-themed and co-ordinate with the
fabric backing you’re going to use. You may find you need long-nosed
pliers or wire cutters to dismantle old jewellery so you can reuse the
parts.</td>

</b>The main body of your brooch is formed
of two rectangles of similar fabric. One of these pieces will be the
front, on to which you’ll be sewing your ‘found object’ embellishments.
The second will be the back and you’ll be sewing the safety pin onto
this. Our fabric rectangles measure 7cm wide by 6cm high. You will need
a third, smaller rectangle of matching fabric which will be used to help
secure the safety pin. You will also need a small rectangle of stiff
cardboard which will give your brooch support.</td>

</b>Design your brooch by picking out a
few of your favourite found objects and laying them on the fabric front.
It may take a few goes to decide which objects to use and how to lay
them out. We really like this dangly jewel from an earring which had
lost its pair, so we placed this down first and then picked out a few
other objects to compliment it. Sew these all into place with matching
thread. The back will be hidden, so doesn’t need to be too neat.</td>

other and using a co-ordinating coloured thread, sew these two pieces
together. Use back stitch and aim to keep the stitches of equal length.
Sew around 3 sides of the brooch. When you’ve finished the third side,
take the space piece of cardboard and place this inside the brooch.
Continue in back stitch to sew up the remaining side, so the cardboard
is sealed inside.</td>
